Hancock House Author John Sweet Honored in Alaska

Alaska Governor Sean Parnell has ordered all state flags to be lowered to half-staff today, Friday, January 3rd, in memory of former Representative John M. Sweet who passed away in Boulder, Colorado on September 11, 2013 at age 88. Mr. Sweet was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives and served from 1969–1970, representing Anchorage.

Born in Parker, Pennsylvania, Mr. Sweet served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. As a petroleum geologist, he had a 35-year career with Atlantic Richfield Company, one-third of which was spent in Alaska where he was district explorationist at the time of the massive Prudhoe Bay oil discovery. He documented this exciting story in his book Discovery at Prudhoe Bay.
